With all the talk about the economy and money these days we wanted to know what lesson did you learn about money from your parents. Tracey learned that money was a source of tension and even to this day wants to avoid talking about it. Dave learned that if you want something you have to buy it, and not presume that it will be handed to you. He shared how he wanted a TV for his room when he was 14 years old and his parents told him if he could cut grass and save enough he could buy it. He worked all summer making three dollars a lawn and bought his little 9 inch black and white TV. He still has it.

I took away both the bad and the good from my parents (don't we all?).
My father was very frugal. I didn't know how poor we really were (by the world's standards, I guess) until we had to take over his finances this year while he was very ill. I would never have asked for all those "wants" growing up if I had known how much he sacrificed for his family!
Yet that lifestyle has turned me into an avid coupon clipper and clearance shopper! This helped us become debt free as of last month (including student loans) and we do not feel deprived of anything in the least!
I also learned from my parents that investing does not mean working towards a goal of paying off your house. That's great but then what?
Something else I learned (though not from my parents) is that saving for a home to pay for entirely with cash could actually cost more money in the long run. Interest!!!

I have really missed hearing Jimmy Page at 7:30 on Friday mornings for the "health and fitness" session. Is WRBS still broadcasting that? It was always very inspirational for me.
