Jumping the Gun

Ok, I couldn't wait.

On Friday we start reading through the Bible in 90 Days. That's still two days away, but I started today...sort of.

We've been talking about this on the air now for a couple weeks, and we keep saying it takes 30-45 minutes a day. Does it really? That sounded right, but I didn't know from first hand experience. I also wanted to make sure that this doesn't simply become something to check off a to-do list. Sure, any time spent in God's Word is good, but I want it to be more than that. I want this chunk of time to be one of the highlights of my day and something I can't wait to get to.

So today I had some time and decided to do the first day's reading to get these two questions answered. At 3:35p I started. At 3:37p my 19 year old wanted to talk about his second day of college. Hmmm. I wonder how often this is going to happen over the course of the 90 days? Real life, that is. I'm guessing...and just a hunch here...all 90 days? After 13 minutes of quality conversation he left to do his History homework and I started at Genesis 1:1 again. The 90 Day Reading Schedule indicates a first day reading of Gen 1:1 through Gen 16:6. I stopped at 4:19p....29 minutes later. I actually went a chapter and a half past the end point because it was so compelling. But, more importantly, it didn't feel like I was simply reading words to reach a goal, but I was absorbing them. I know those who organized this schedule strongly suggest we use this time to read the Bible like a book, and not approach it as a study or even devotion time, but I always read with pencil in hand. I love making notes in everything I read, and today was no different. I underlined a few passages that grabbed my attention and even made a couple notes in the margin.

Bottom line...it took me less than 30 minutes, and it did not feel like simply reading words and pages to check off a goal.

So, we'll chalk today up as investigative reporting. On Friday I'll start again with everyone else on Genesis 1:1. And, yes, I'll have my pencil in hand ready to make notes on verses that seem new and fresh even after reading them two days earlier. The Bible is cool like that.
