"..with fear and trembling continue to work out your own salvation."
The next verse says: "for it is God who is working in you to will and to do."
So the fear and trembling is a good thing, because it is our Savior who is working in us, through the Holy Spirit. It would be worthless to do all these things if not done by the Holy Spirit. And really we can't do the things of God with his Spirit.
"Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit says the Lord."
So we live by faith in God, that He will give us His Spirit, fill us with His Spirit, and empower us with His Spirit, to bear fruit for His glory. All that we do is for His glory. And the genuine Christian loves this truth. We must decrease, while He increases!
Not that I do this, because I don't. I struggle greatly to walk in the Spirit. yet the truth is the truth.
Here'a one last quote:
"The toaster cannot produce toast unless it is "connected," so that its nichrome wire is heated by the electricity from the electric power house. The electris iron is useless unless the plug of the iron has been pushed into the wall outlet. ...."As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me" (John 15:4)." -William Hendriksen
